European officials confirmed the bean sprouts as a source of plague bacterium E. coli which claimed the death toll there.
Authorities Saturday said the contaminated bean sprouts originating from organic farming in northern Germany, near Hamburg. They said the results of laboratory tests showed sprouts or sprouts from the farm that contains a type of bacteria causing the infection. Agriculture has been closed by public health officials.
At least 33 people were killed and about 3,000 others fell ill from an outbreak that erupted last month. Except for one person, all the victims were killed and the majority of people infected are in Germany.
Health officials initially blamed the spread of bacteria from cucumbers and other vegetables from Spain. Allegations then extended to other European countries, led to European Union farmers millions of dollars in losses because their production is left to rot in fields and warehouses. Russia, one of the largest vegetable market of the European Union, the original ban imports from Europe, but on Friday said it would revoke the ban.
German authorities have lifted the ban on eating tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce on Friday but declared the crisis is not over and people should not eat sprouts.
Russia does not state when it will start again imports of vegetables from the European Union. Russian officials say it would depend on how fast the EU will send the documents that guarantee the security of the vegetables. The European Union promised to send the document within the next two days
