Prometheus news attack: first official image, Ridley Scott speaks

Over at the San Diego Comic-Con, Ridley Scott’s been talking about his forthcoming Prometheus. Here’s a round-up of what we know so far...

Up until now, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, the movie formerly known as the untitled Alien prequel, has been a mystery wrapped up in a cinematic enigma. It’s quite a surprise, therefore, that both Scott and several of his movie’s cast members have been so forthcoming at Comic-Con in San Diego.
Lucky fans at the convention treated to a screening of some early footage, which sadly, we’ve not been able to see for ourselves. According to Wired, though, it features astronauts exploring a hieroglyph-festooned chamber, and one character removing some jelly-like stuff from a jar. “The cast find an establishment which is not what they expected it to be, it’s a civilization but what we find in it is very uncivilised behaviour,” Scott explained. Then the screen lit up with some rapid-fire edits of people with some sort of goo in their helmets, other people toasting things with flame throwers, and still other people screaming their heads off.
“Of course, what I want to do is scare the living shit out of you,” Scott said, ominously.
After the footage, Charlize Theron, who plays a character called Meredith Vickers, showed up to talk about her character, who appears to be some sort of android along the lines of Ash or Bishop in Alien and Aliens.
“She’s very different from anything I’ve done. She’s a suit, essentially. She’s kind of the machine that runs the machine, that takes this mission into space [...] In the third act, you really kind of strip her from her skin and see what her bones are about, and what she’s really doing there.”
It’s possible that Theron’s references to machines and skin stripped from bones were figurative rather than literal, though Ridley Scott himself said elsewhere that there would be two androids in the film, so it’s quite likely that Meredith Vickers really is an android. One brief seen in the Comic-Con footage reportedly showed Theron doing push-ups in the nude - now there’s something we never saw Ian Holm or Lance Henriksen do for the cameras.
But back to Ridley Scott, who continued to talk in riddles about Prometheus’ connection to Alien and its shared ‘DNA’.
“I realised there was something in the first Alien movie that nobody had ever asked the question about,” Scott said. “That said, that is the only DNA loosely applied to the original Alien. We’ve gone in a different directions, but in the last few minutes of this movie you’ll see what I’m talking about.”
It’s all intriguing stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree, though we desperately wish we were at Comic-Con so we could see that footage for ourselves. Instead, we’ll have to make do with the first official image from Prometheus, which you can see below (click the little thumbnail to get a better view). Like just about everything Scott’s said about the film, it poses more questions than it answers.
Prometheus is due out next summer. In the meantime, if that Comic-Con footage appears online, we’ll be sure to share it with you.
